Applying a Public Service Perspective

To articulate and apply a public service perspective

There is no profit in public sector work; there is no revenue to subtract expenses from to show whether money was lost or gained, even if there is income. Instead, work in the public sector is measured in outcomes. Without the motivation of profit, workers in the public sector must instead be self-motivated and show a concern for the people they serve. Applying a public service perspective means making sure decisions serve the public as well as the institution. One of my earliest classes was government theory, where the professor would always ask a simple question in Latin: “Cui bono? Who benefits.” I make sure I’m always asking this question when I think about decisions made in the public sector. Making sure the public sector truly benefits the public is the purest definition of public service.

Review

This is a review of the work “The New Public Service” by Janet and Robert Denhardt and demonstrates these competencies and values:

  • The ability to analyze theoretical frameworks and apply them to the real world

  • The importance of a citizen centric approach to governance

  • The importance of seeking out and consulting stakeholders rather letting them come to you

Grant Writing Assignment

This assignment is a simulated grant application to the Central Alabama Community Foundation. I was required to first choose an actual nonprofit in Central Alabama and then develop a fictional initiative that the nonprofit might undertake. This assignment demonstrates these competencies:

  • A familiarity with the grant-making process that would allow me, for example, to help an environmental nonprofit apply for a grant for brown-site cleanup, or coastal conservation

  • An ability to apply my professional values to program design

  • The importance of envisioning potential impacts of a program including those that may be unintended or negative
