To lead and manage in public governance
Leadership
As the public and nonprofit sectors continue to tackle more challenges with fewer people, it is necessary that every employee in these sectors be prepared to take on a leadership role. This role could mean managing programs, people, or both. Leadership and management mean being able to not only understand the complexities of a task, but also communicate them in a way that is confident and easy to understand. Leadership also means being a good steward of resources, including finances, and insuring they are allocated efficiently. My courses, as well as my internship, have improved my leadership and management skills through the use of both traditional learning and experiential learning that simulated the workplace.
Model Budget
This assignment is a simulated budget prepared for the Elkton Drainage District, Vilano Lighting District, and St. Augustine South Lighting district in St. John’s county Florida. It demonstrates these competencies:

An ability to implement common methods of revenue projection used in the public sector
-
A familiarity with excel and the use of complex functions within excel
-
An understanding of the importance of responsibly managing public resources
VW Draft Proposal
One of the most rewarding experiences from my time as an intern in the energy department at the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs was working on Alabama’s program for allocating the funds from the Volkswagen Diesel emissions Settlement. I was tasked with developing the initial framework for the allocation of these funds. This project required several important skills:
-
A capability to work across multiple disciplines from the technical to the procedural
-
A capacity to coordinate among coworkers of various expertise such as electrical engineering or a familiarity with the regulatory process
-
An ability to take complex information from various sources and use it in the development of a comprehensive plan
